Most banks here charge a monthly fee.  I think our one is actually over $10 a month, this covers the cost of printed cheques (if you need them--or at least it used to, I rarely use them!), point of sale (debit) payments, etc.  The other is $4, and if it weren't for the fact that you can only make 10 payments/withdrawals in one month without incurring a service charge on top of that, I'd transfer. I don't know what the average amount of a Social Security check is, but I know a lot of people get less than 1,000.00 a month. Maybe groups like AARP could help with this?...Linda H .
